The "Youth Skilled Trades & Careers Expo 2026," hosted by David Smith, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Scarborough Centre, was grandly held on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Ellesmere Community Centre. Invited through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Toronto, the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) at Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto actively set up a booth to showcase the unique charm of Taiwan’s Mandarin education and talent development.
The expo received significant attention from the Ontario provincial government. Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mines, and David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, both attended in person to show their support. Lawrence Liang, Director General of TECO in Toronto, and Dr. Paul Lan, Director of the Culture Center of TECO in Toronto, also visited to offer their encouragement, creating a lively atmosphere.
The expo attracted numerous young students, parents, and professionals across various fields. Principal Jane Shu-Chen Huang of Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto personally led her team at the booth. In addition to vigorously promoting high-quality Adult Mandarin Programs, TCML partnered with Carol Chow, Director of the Taiwan Trade Center in Toronto, to promote "Contact TAIWAN"—Taiwan's national talent recruitment platform. Together, they showcased Taiwan's premier career opportunities, industrial strengths, and diverse culture to mainstream Canadian society.
During the event, distinguished guests—including host MPP David Smith, Energy Minister Stephen Lecce, and Labour Minister David Piccini—visited the TCML booth to interact with the team. They expressed high praise and appreciation for Tzu Chi's long-standing dedication to Mandarin education, local community cultural exchange, and interdisciplinary learning. Guided by the enthusiastic explanations from Director General Liang, Director Lan, Principal Huang, and Director Chow, the booth drew large crowds of youth and community members eager to inquire about fall Mandarin courses and career prospects in Taiwan, creating an unprecedented level of interaction.
Principal Jane Shu-Chen Huang of TCML - Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Director General Lawrence Liang of TECO Toronto for the introduction, as well as MPP David Smith for providing such a wonderful mainstream platform. She stated that TCML will continue to step beyond traditional Chinese communities by participating in diverse events organized by mainstream government and local organizations, helping more local residents understand the practical value of learning Mandarin while promoting deeper talent and cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Canada.

Heading into the Mainstream! OCAC Minister Hsu Chia-ching Visits TCML - Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto

A new chapter has been written for Taiwan’s high-quality Mandarin education in Eastern Canada! On the afternoon of May 31, Minister Hsu Chia-ching of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) personally visited the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) at Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto for an official inspection and an in-depth seminar.
The event was a grand success, attended by a distinguished delegation of honorable guests. Among the VIPs accompanying the Minister were Director-General Lawrence Liang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Toronto, Director Paul Lan and Deputy Director Daphne Hsu of the Culture Center of TECO in Toronto, as well as Senior Overseas Community Affairs Commissioners Peter Huang and Bill Giang. Representatives from Tzu Chi included Andersen Chu, CEO of Tzu Chi Foundation Canada (Eastern Region); Deputy CEOs Mike Wang and Shu-Fang Huang; Principal Jane Shu-Chen Huang; Administrative Director Francis Leung; and instructor Angel Cheng. Together, they demonstrated a shared and firm commitment between the government and overseas Taiwanese schools to deeply cultivate the adult Mandarin education market.
During the seminar, Minister Hsu highlighted that the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) is a global initiative sponsored and guided by the OCAC. It is dedicated to promoting Traditional Mandarin education with unique Taiwanese characteristics across Europe, North America, and globally. Designed primarily for adult learners aged 18 and older, TCML provides international students with a high-quality learning environment and rich cultural experiences within a free, diverse, and academically open atmosphere, utilizing advanced smart-learning technologies.
Minister Hsu emphasized that the core value of TCML extends beyond language teaching—it is about sharing inspiring "Taiwan Stories" with the world. The academy currently utilizes Let’s Learn Mandarin!, a specialized second-language textbook provided by the OCAC, combined with AI-assisted teaching techniques. This approach brilliantly showcases the competitive edge of Taiwan's smart education industry and serves as a vital bridge connecting students with Taiwan, making TCML a premium window for the mainstream public to experience Taiwan's diverse and innovative culture.
Furthermore, Minister Hsu noted that under the framework of the "Taiwan-U.S. Education Initiative" and the "Program for Overseas Mandarin Education Excellence in Europe and America," TCML serves not only as a crucial hub for promoting Traditional Mandarin but also as a landmark brand that upholds academic freedom and democratic values. As a model school in the region, Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto's exceptional educational standards have successfully filled the demand gap for adult Mandarin learning in mainstream society.
The journey of TCML at Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto goes beyond impressive enrollment growth; it represents the solid brand trust that Taiwan’s premium Mandarin education has earned within the local mainstream community. Principal Jane Shu-Chen Huang shared that in response to the growing enthusiasm for language learning, the school has developed an active expansion strategy. An "additional class expansion" is scheduled for the upcoming third phase starting this September. Fragrance of Ink, Zongzi Leaves, and Dragon Boat Spirit! TCML Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience Camp a Resounding Success

Under the meticulous demonstration of Ms. Sammi Huang, the students embarked on their very first hands-on zongzi wrapping experience.
To welcome the Dragon Boat Festival, one of the three major traditional Chinese festivals, the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) — Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto recently hosted a unique "Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Experience Camp." The event deeply integrated language learning with traditional customs. Through storytelling, calligraphy, ink painting, making vegetarian zongzi, and learning about dragon boat racing, all adult students were guided through a rich cultural feast for the five senses.
A Journey Through Festival Culture: From the Legend of Qu Yuan to Dragon Boat Customs
The event kicked off in a lively and warm atmosphere. First, Ms. Angel Cheng took the stage, using beautiful presentation slides to vividly share the historical origins of the Dragon Boat Festival and the story of its central figure, Qu Yuan. Ms. Cheng also introduced various traditional customs one by one, including wrapping zongzi, racing dragon boats, hanging mugwort, making fragrant sachets, and the highly challenging activity of "egg balancing," giving students a comprehensive understanding of this ancient festival.
Putting Pen to Paper: The Blessings and Stroke Orders of "Duanwu Ankang 端午安康"
Next, Ms. Sammi Shu Fang Huang led everyone into the artistic world of Chinese characters. Ms. Huang introduced traditional calligraphy culture and the characteristics of different ink brushes in detail, while deeply explaining the wishes of peace and well-being embedded within the four characters "Duanwu Ankang" (Wishing you a safe and healthy Dragon Boat Festival). Under the teacher's demonstration of stroke orders, the adult students, who are usually accustomed to typing, picked up calligraphy brushes one after another. They practiced with deep concentration on festive red paper, writing their own holiday blessings of "Duanwu Ankang 端午安康" stroke by stroke.
A Dual Experience for the Ink Palette and Taste Buds: Ink Bamboo Painting and Hands-on Zongzi Making
Zen Ink Bamboo Painting: Introduced by Principal Jane Huang, Chinese painting instructor Ms. Shou-Ben Clough (張孝本) led everyone into the moving world of ink wash painting. Ms. Shou-Ben Clough demonstrated painting bamboo on-site, guiding students on how to use the variance of ink density—dark, light, dry, and wet—to sketch the upright posture and integrity of bamboo. She also specially demonstrated a unique technique for rendering the moon on Xuan paper, utilizing shading and negative space to accentuate the poetic beauty of bamboo under the moonlight. The students practiced on Xuan paper themselves, marveling at the infinite variations of ink art!
Skill at the Fingertips — Zongzi Wrapping Experience: After completing their ink paintings, the students gathered around Ms. Sammi Huang once again, listening attentively to how rice dumpling leaves, strings, and a rich variety of fillings are paired together. Under Ms. Huang's meticulous demonstration, everyone embarked on their first-ever zongzi wrapping experience, marveling: "It turns out that every single twist and turn of folding the leaves, filling the rice, and tying the string harbors so much craftsmanship and skill!"
The Fragrance of Tzu Chi Vegetarian Zongzi: To allow everyone to taste the traditional delicacy right away, Principal Jane Huang thoughtfully prepared pre-steamed, aromatic Tzu Chi vegetarian zongzi. This allowed each student to take them home to share with their families, extending this warmth into the community.
Dragon Boat Secrets Revealed and a Perfect Group Photo
In addition to the static arts of calligraphy, painting, and handcrafts, the most exhilarating and indispensable element of the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat racing. The event specially invited TCML student Don Xu to share his real-world experience, team chemistry, and masterful paddling techniques with the teachers and students. The live interaction was vibrant, drawing continuous applause.
Principal Jane Huang also shared that the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival will be held at Toronto Island on June 13 and 14, 2026, encouraging students to take their families to watch the races outdoors and enjoy a scenic spring outing if time permits.
At the conclusion of the event, all students, instructors, and distinguished guests gathered for a commemorative group photo. Director Paul Lan and Deputy Director Daphne Hsu of the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto also graced the event with their presence. Together with Principal Jane Huang, the teachers, and the students, they smiled for the camera while proudly holding up their hand-wrapped zongzi, freshly painted ink bamboo artworks, and ink-scented "Duanwu Ankang 端午安康" red papers—leaving a perfect historical testimony for this wonderful festival experience that beautifully combined tradition, art, and culinary delights.

Celebrating Canadian Asian Heritage Month with an In-Depth Exploration of Taiwanese Culture
To celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Canada, the 2026 "Taiwan Night — Glorious Taiwan" grandly opened on the evening of May 31 at the Culture Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Toronto and concluded with resounding success!
For the teachers, students, and parents of the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) - Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto, this event was far more than just a cultural celebration; it served as a lively, vibrant, and real-world experiential class on Taiwanese culture and customs. Moving beyond classroom textbooks, the students, teachers, and their families—who usually learn and grow together each week—personally experienced the authentic sounds, vivid colors, and warm hospitality of Taiwan during this significant festival dedicated to Asian cultural heritage.
Diverse Exhibition Booths: A First Cultural Experience for TCML Teachers, Students, and Parents
In the diverse booth area specially designed to showcase Taiwan's vitality and honor Asian Heritage Month, TCML students, teachers, and their families had an immensely joyful time. Through a rich array of hands-on crafts and displays, everyone gained a comprehensive and multi-faceted understanding of Taiwan's traditional customs and contemporary creativity.
Traditional Arts and Aesthetics Experience
Teachers, students, and parents enthusiastically gathered around booths featuring creative paper crafts, Chinese knotting, various traditional scented sachets, and premium Taiwanese tea. Through hands-on exploration and tea tasting, they developed a deep appreciation for Taiwanese tea culture and lifestyle aesthetics. Attendees also paused at the traditional glove puppetry (Budaixi) booth to get an up-close look at this precious, time-honored Taiwanese palm art form.
Showcasing Learning Achievements Through Fun and Games
At the exclusive booth hosted by TCML - Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto, students confidently demonstrated their Mandarin learning accomplishments under the careful guidance of their instructors. Through interactive games such as "character guessing," "Jing Si Aphorisms matching," and the "Lucky Wheel," they engaged in warm and enthusiastic interactions with local community friends in Toronto.
International and Technological Perspectives
Additionally, the TCML community visited the Toronto Police Service exhibition and the book display for Inspired by Taiwan by Canadian technology lawyer George Takach, gaining an international perspective on Taiwan's vital and leading role in global democracy and advanced technology.
A Splendid Stage: Heart-Stirring Sounds of Taiwan
Beyond the rich booth experiences, the highlight that truly captivated the entire TCML community was the spectacular performance brought by the Formosa Melody Music Center from Yilan, Taiwan—an international-class performing arts group visiting as part of the official cultural delegation for Canadian Asian Heritage Month!
The Formosa Melody Music Center seamlessly blended tradition with modernity, delivering a series of familiar and classic melodies. The audience and TCML students cheered, clapped, and waved along with the rhythm, bringing the atmosphere to an absolute peak! This magnificent visual and auditory feast allowed everyone to deeply appreciate the unique charm of Taiwanese culture, which masterfully preserves ancient traditions while colliding with modern trends to create infinite possibilities.
In the precious moment captured during the final group photo, TCML students proudly raised their colorful "TCML" signs—symbols of honor and belonging—celebrating alongside local Canadian and Taiwanese community friends, as well as representatives from the Toronto Police Service.
This "Taiwan Night" allowed the TCML family to deeply feel the profound friendship between Canada and Taiwan, rooted in shared values such as democracy, diversity, and multiculturalism. Through first-hand experiences at the cultural booths and the profound impact of the stage performances, students not only enhanced their practical understanding of Taiwanese customs but also injected greater passion into their future Mandarin learning and cultural exchange journeys.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the organizing teams, dedicated volunteers, and friends who supported Taiwan Night. Through cultural exchange, Canada has truly been able to see Taiwan. As this year's Taiwan Night concluded beautifully, a moment of historic significance took place in front of the magnificent stage: Principal Jane Shu-Chen Huang of Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto was officially honored by the Overseas Community Affairs Council of the Republic of China (Taiwan) with the prestigious appointment as an Overseas Community Affairs Advisor. She stood with OCAC Minister Hsu Chia-ching for a commemorative photograph, drawing a perfect and historic conclusion to this grand cultural celebration.

The 2026 Traditional Chinese Characters Carnival & Overseas Chinese School Expo was a vibrant Chinese language promotion event that beautifully integrated traditional cultural heritage with modern educational philosophies. Centered around the theme "Promoting Traditional Chinese Characters and Experiencing the Joy of Traditional Culture," the event drew enthusiastic participation from numerous families, students, and community members, filling the venue with a rich cultural atmosphere and joyful energy.
At this wonderful cultural carnival, Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto thoughtfully designed an educational and interactive booth. Through a variety of engaging cultural experiences, visitors were able to appreciate the beauty of Traditional Chinese characters and the deep heritage of Chinese culture in a relaxed and cheerful environment.
In addition to the rich booth interactions, the dynamic stage performances by the academy’s students and volunteers stood out as a major highlight of the event. On the stage of the "Toronto Area Chinese Characters Festival Series," the morning session opened with an exquisite cello solo of Danse Rustique by volunteer Apple Hong (洪采妍), whose melodious performance added a sophisticated artistic touch to the venue.
Following the musical opening, students from Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto showcased their exceptional Mandarin speaking skills and poised stage presence during the speech presentations. First to take the stage was Rui Wang (王瑞), who spoke on the topic: "A person’s happiness comes not from how much he owns, but from how little he complains." Through a sincere and steady delivery, he shared the deep wisdom and life philosophy of Tzu Chi’s Jing Si Aphorisms with the audience. Shortly after, Daniella Lee (李丹彤) delivered an inspiring speech on "Filial Piety," using clear and fluent Mandarin to convey the core traditional virtue of respecting and caring for one's parents. The students' insightful speeches, musical talents, and confident expressions not only won enthusiastic applause from the audience, but also served as the finest testament to the school's years of dedication to Chinese language education and character cultivation.
At the booth, detailed introductions were provided for the adult Mandarin courses offered by the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML). The display showcased diverse teaching materials, unique course features, and student achievements, providing professional and high-quality learning resources for community members interested in mastering Mandarin. Many visitors expressed great interest in the curriculum design and teaching methods, leading to lively and warm exchanges throughout the day.
To give attendees of all ages a deeper experience of Chinese characters, the booth featured a fun interactive game called "Discovering Chinese Characters." This lively activity guided participants to explore the structure, evolution, and cultural meanings of Traditional Chinese characters. Through the game, children not only learned new words but also gained greater interest and confidence in the Mandarin language.
Furthermore, the "Jing Si Aphorism Puzzle" activity—inspired by Tzu Chi’s core educational philosophy—allowed participants to contemplate and experience wise, inspiring words through interactive play, highlighting the profound value of character education and humanistic spirit.
A lucky prize wheel was also set up at the booth, offering beautiful bookmarks and small gifts to those who successfully completed the challenges. The colorful booth decorations, diverse prizes, and the warm, friendly interactions with the volunteer teachers attracted many children to stay and play, while parents truly felt the joy and cultural charm of learning Chinese.
Through activities that perfectly balanced knowledge, fun, and educational value, Tzu Chi Academy North Toronto successfully integrated Traditional Chinese character culture and humanistic values into an interactive experience. This participation brought immense vitality and warmth to the carnival, achieving fruitful results and leaving precious memories in the ongoing mission of language education and cultural preservation.

Infusing Humanistic Vitality: Tzu Chi Establishes Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning in North Toronto
(DaAi TV Report) Adding a stream of humanistic values to the community, Tzu Chi has officially established the "Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning" (TCML) in North Toronto, Canada, injecting new vitality into the local cultural landscape.
Amidst ribbon-cutting and celebrations, the TCML at Tzu Chi Academy, North Toronto was inaugurated on March 21, 2026.
"We aim to create high-quality Chinese language education," stated Huang Shu-chen, Principal of Tzu Chi Academy, North Toronto.
The event was attended by 80 distinguished guests, including Members of Parliament, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Richmond Hill, City Councilors, and leaders of the overseas Chinese community. The celebration demonstrated the high social credibility and diplomatic honor the academy enjoys.
"This is vital for our community because being able to celebrate each other’s language and culture is part of what makes us vibrant and dynamic as Canadians," said Member of Parliament Majid Jowhari. "In Richmond Hill, we are very lucky because we have one of the most flourishing and vibrant Chinese-speaking communities outside of Asia."
Lawrence Liang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Toronto, remarked: "Tzu Chi’s long-standing promotion of Chinese education in Eastern Canada has earned an excellent reputation and widespread praise. With the assistance of Tzu Chi Academy, North Toronto, we have already seen outstanding initial results."
An accountant who has been studying for only two months is already able to introduce himself clearly. Sohel Suterwala, a TCML student, said: "How are you? (Good) I am very well. My surname is Suterwala, my name is Sohel. I am a student of Chinese. I am Indian and also Canadian."
The official launch of TCML symbolizes the transformation of Tzu Chi’s local education from youth-focused programs toward all-age lifelong learning, completing the vision for a comprehensive learning community.
